Report: Saudis buying Balkan arms for Syrian rebels (AFP/Daily Star)
Background: Weapons trade between the Balkans and the Middle East is established since long. After the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) large contingents were sold to former Yugoslavia.
Lebanese Forces (LF) tanks and armoured personnel carriers displaying the party’s cross could be seen on CNN during the time of the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s.

Der u.g. Text war als Disqus-Beitrag für die Kommentarsektion der WELT gedacht, ist aber von den Moderatoren nicht veröffentlicht worden. Er bezieht sich auf den dort veröffentlichten Artikel “Dem Arabischen Frühling folgen die Islamisten” (Autor: Boualem Sansal)
Der “Arabische Frühling” musste einfach fürchterlich in die Hose gehen, weil die Region für eine grundsätzliche Veränderung der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse in keiner Weise bereit ist.
Einschätzung zu “Hisbollah muss endlich auf Europas Terrorliste!” (DIE WELT, Autor: Clemens Wergin, 07/02/2013)
Es sieht momentan nicht danach auch, als ob die EU die Hisbollah Organisation auf die Terrorliste setzen würde. Es gibt auch keine klaren Richtlinien dafür, wer unter welchen Umständen auf diese Liste kommt. Solche Entscheidungen sind rein politisch.
Da Frankreich und Großbritannien aber aktive Kontakte zu Hisbollah unterhalten, kann man deren – oder zumindest Frankreichs – Veto schon mal einkalkulieren.

Arming “paramilitary” forces, which in fact are militias, has rarely been a good idea. They take the knowledge and the arms. Once they got what they wanted, they are loose guns and often the nightmare of their fellow countrymen.
Ordinary people in Syria don’t have an agenda. They want to eat, drink and send their children to school. Life in Syria was not as bad for the majority of people as one might think when now we read about the “dictator” Bashar al-Assad, who was the “President” for ten years before the uprising.

Einschätzung der Lage – Kommentar zu “Dichter Nebel um vermeintlichen Angriff Israels” (Welt Online, 31. Januar 2013)
Wir denken nicht, dass es in naher Zukunft zu einer größere militärischen Auseinandersetzung kommen wird.
Israel steht nach derzeitigem Stand langfristig wieder eine Mehrfronten Konfrontation bevor, ähnlich wie vor dem Friedensvertrag mit Ägypten.
Syriens Regierung ist gerade dabei, ihre strategische Lage zu konsolidieren.

Syrian President Assad does not represent the whole government.
Ambassador Ford’s comments point in the same direction as Russian Prime Minister Medvedev’s some weeks ago: Preserve the state and force Assad to quit sooner or later. Probably later, giving him enough time to strike a deal with the somewhat secular opposition and eliminate the Islamists.
Still chances are good, Assad will stay for years if he doesn’t fall by the hand of an assassin.

It is worth noting that PM Medvedev mentions Assad but not the government as a whole or state institutions.
Medvedev’s comments go in line with Russia’s policy on Syria: Strengthen the army, try to facilitate a deal between the Non-Islamist opposition and the government, put down the uprising by force, preserve the country as en entity and convince Assad to step down, once calm has settled.
Die Einschätzung nimmt Bezug auf auf den Artikel “Assad’s Löwinnen” (Spiegel Online), dessen Tenor war, die Regierung von Syrien Präsident Bashar al-Assad werfe nun die letzten Kräfte ins Feld (“Volkstum”). Wir sehen das völlig anders.
Wir bitten sprachliche Nachlässigkeiten zu entschuldigen. Der Text wurde schnell “heruntergeschrieben” und sollte – wie gesagt – lediglich ein Kommentar in einem Forum sein.
Einschätzung: In Syrien sieht es aus unserer Sicht danach aus, als ob sich die Armee auf einen Generalangriff gegen die Aufständischen vorbereitet, dafür sämtliche kampferprobten Soldaten von vernachlässigbaren Position abzieht (Checkpoints) und an anderen Stellen zusammenzieht.

Schade, dass in dem Artikel (oder einem Kommentar dazu) eine der wichtigsten Entwicklungen nicht zur Sprache kommt.
Mit zunehmender Energieunabhängigkeit werden die USA auch das Interesse an Israel verlieren, das für den Westen die arabischen Ländern in Schach hält. Daran werden auch sämtliche pressure groups in den USA nichts ändern können.

UPDATE (17:04) France has delayed the release of Georges Abdallah until the end of the month. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati told the French envoy in Beirut such a step was not justified.
